Christmas in Lithuania is often associated with a Christmas tree, snow, lots of lights, joy and time spent together with family and friends. Lithuanians start the celebration of Christmas holiday on the Christmas Eve. That’s an extremely significant celebration when the whole family gets together. Also, everyone has to make sure that none of their closest people left alone.

Following the tradition, there cannot be less than twelve dishes on the table and they cannot contain meat. Usually the meals include fish, salads, mushrooms, kisielius (a traditional Lithuanian drink made with cranberries) and kūčiukai (small, slightly sweet pastries) that are served with poppy seed milk. Another interesting thing that on Christmas Eve Lithuanian’s setting the table with one extra seat. You may ask for who? The answer is: for unexpected guest or family member who has died during the past year.

How Christmas Eve dinner usually prepared?

As predominant religion in Lithuania is Christianity, people usually fast during the day and start their Christmas Eve dinner with a prayer. Then each person takes a Christmas wafer and shares with each other. While breaking and sharing the wafer, people take time to apologize, to thank or simply enjoy each other’s good qualities or help. In some regions of Lithuania people divide an apple into pieces and share it as well as the Christmas wafers.

During the dinner each person has to try at least twelve dishes served on the table. One dish represent one month of the year or according to others, one for each Jesus’ disciple. Otherwise, as Lithuanian‘s ancestors believed, for those who doesn’t follow this rule, the coming year will not be neither rich, nor satiated.

Lithuania’s Christmas spirit. 

After the dinner usually the plates are being left on the table till the next morning. People believe, that the ancestral spirits gather at the dinner table on Christmas night to celebrate. Often children can’t wait the dinner to end, after it everyone expects a visit from Santa Claus.

Moreover, some people still makes different traditional spells in order to know whether they are going to meet the love of their life this year, to travel or to spend more time at home etc. After sharing the gifts, the whole family might go out to Shepherds’ Mass to celebrate the birth of Jesus.

Christmas Day celebration.

On Christmas Day, Lithuanians usually gather again for lunch or dinner with their family, friends and even neighbors. Enjoying each other’s company, exchanging gifts, watching Christmas movies, listening to Christmas music, visiting a Christmas tree at the city center, ice skating, having snowball fight or building snowmen. On the first and second Christmas days friends and distant relatives can visit.

Every weekend from November 24th till January 6th a park full of giant sculptures of light will be open in Pakruojis manor. More than 20 thematic installations of light, made of a few hundred silk lanterns, specially created in China. Theatricalized shows of Lithuanian and Chinese actors, workshops of Chinese artists and craftsman’s, tastes of the Oriental cuisine and festive fair.

The Baron of Pakruojis manor visited the Far East with his family, and he was fascinated by the magical things he had never seen before. The Baron, who loved acquaintanceship with different cultures, had the honor to experience an uncommon celebration of light.

Once a year, all native inhabitants gather all together to get the miraculous energy from the earth, water, and air creatures, and even from giant lanterns that have got the shapes of the dragon – the ruler of fire. But what the Baron liked the most was that Orientals come from the furthest regions together with their families in order to see these remarkable creations. Convivially minded they participate in performances, try the tastiest local meals, and in the time of winter darkness together they create an indescribable oasis of light.

Therefore, the Baron of Pakruojis decided to arrange such celebration this winter in his manor, and to invite everyone who receives this news.

A magical journey of lights full of Oriental exotica and full of romance from a XIXth century manor will start November 24th and be continuing until January 6th every Friday, Saturday and Sunday + December 25 and 26.

Christopher Festival is the largest and one of the most impressive summer music festivals that held in Lithuania since 1995. In July and August, over 40 original concert events are presented to the public. You can join the event that takes place in Vilnius or other regions of Lithuania.

This festival does not easily fit into any stylistic frame – its motto being “all genres are good, except the boring ones”. So, alongside classical music masterpieces there’s jazz, world music, experimental projects, and traditional music cycles.

This year Latin Grammy winners Sone Del Nene will take you to intoxicating Cuba and prove that everyone can dance. Gypsy jazz guitar virtuoso Joscho Stephan fires off musical sparks at such speeds that music critics recommend his audiences to “sit down and buckle up” when they come to his concerts. The phenomenal trumpet player Pacho Flores will play as many as ten (!) trumpets at one concert, while the young vocal star Jomantė Šležaitė will unveil the stunning beauty of Lithuania singing the most beautiful of melodies.

As per tradition, every Tuesday the resonant sounds of the organ will be heard at St Casimir’s Church, played by the most renowned performers including Gail Archer (USA), Andrzej Chorosinski (Poland), Luca Ratti (Italy), Hamfried Lucke (Austria), Karolina Juodelytė (Lithuania), and others.

This is an excellent opportunity to combine different fields – music, history and architecture – and see the concerts themselves in a different light.

Dating back to the medieval times, it was first marked on a world map in 1154, although the first fortress was built on Toompea in 1050. The city, known as Reval at the time, prospered as a trading town in the 14th century, and much of Tallinn’s historic center was built at this time. Tallinn then became a pawn in the geopolitical games of its big neighbors, passing into Swedish hands in 1561 and then to Russia under Peter the Great in 1710. By World War I and the ensuing brief Estonian independence (starting 1918) Tallinn’s population had reached 150,000.

Tallinn today
